The Pavel Haas Quartet has been one of the most exciting string quartets for years. The ensemble was founded in 2002 in Prague by violinist Veronika Jarůšková and violist Pavel Nikl. The quartet is named after composer Pavel Haas. His work has been an important reference point since its inception and serves as an artistic compass for the ensemble.
From their home base in Prague, the musicians perform in the world's major halls and are renowned for their warm sound, fiery performance, and close communication with each other. Gramophone once called them "the world’s most exciting string quartet."
In this concert, they return to music that is close to their origins, focusing entirely on Czech and Central European repertoire. With Janáček’s (referring to Tolstoy) Kreutzer Sonata, Korngold’s Second Quartet, and Dvořák’s sunny American, they return to the heart of their musical identity: intense chamber music in which folk music, emigration, love, and tragedy resonate.
In the realm of CD recordings, the Pavel Haas Quartet has built an impressive reputation. The ensemble has received five Gramophone Awards. Their recording of Dvořák’s String Quartets No. 12 American and No. 13 was awarded the title Recording of the Year in 2011, the highest honor from the magazine.
Whether this performance has an interval is not yet known.
