Heijmans & Vrienten

Wachtend op de dood

Verkoop v.a. 23 May 12:00 uur
What if our Dutch cabaret artists had grown up not in the Low Countries, but deep in the American South? What would Maarten van Roozendaal have sounded like if he had been born in New Orleans? Or Boudewijn de Groot in Nashville? What if Shaffy had washed up in Memphis instead of Amsterdam? Or, the other way around: what if Townes van Zandt’s family had never left the Zaan region? And imagine the sound of Dr. John—but on Marken.

Maarten Heijmans and Xander Vrienten set out to find the answers in Wachten op de dood. Perhaps the worlds of folk, blues and Dutch cabaret are closer than you think. Tales of loss, longing and the small tragedies of life. Stories about ordinary people and their fate. We with a piano, they with a guitar—but always armed with sharp lines and a dose of irony.

Somewhere between the Jordaan and the Mississippi, in the waiting room of death, Heijmans and Vrienten stand with their band. And while they wait for death, they begin to live.

Maarten Heijmans and Xander Vrienten discovered their shared love for music from the American South during their collaboration on the musical Hadestown. Two musicians who understand each other with just a word—or a sound—as long as they can blend blues, folk, jazz and cabaret. And that is exactly what they do in Wachten op de dood.
