A fresh face for a vibrant venue
“With a renewed entrance, we’re creating more openness and a stronger connection to the square,” says Pernel van Herpt, Head of Buildings & Technology. “The steps will function as a natural stage, ideal for programming and encounters. In this way, the Concertzaal remains a lively focal point in the cultural heart of the city.”
The foyer will also be made more spacious, with a wider entrance and a redesigned bar. Additional toilets and a new lift will improve accessibility. The balcony, too, will be upgraded; optimised sightlines will ensure that every visitor enjoys a top‑quality experience. The interior will receive a fresh makeover by designer Nicole van Beers, with careful attention to both circulation and seating.
Sustainable, comfortable and ready for the future
Sustainability is at the core of the renovation. The iconic light artwork by Peter Struycken will be fitted with energy‑efficient LED lighting, as will the public areas. New air‑handling units with a heat‑cold recovery system will reduce energy consumption while enhancing comfort.
Although the Concertzaal will remain closed until 1 November 2025, the music certainly won’t stop. Performances will move to the Studio and the Schouwburg, where advanced technology will help us deliver an optimal acoustic experience. After this renovation, the Concertzaal will not only be renewed, but truly future‑proof: a place where music comes alive, continues to amaze, and brings people together.
