New York, 1969. In a bar filled with colour and music, drag queens and activists fight for their existence. Among them is the iconic Marsha P. Johnson. It marks the beginning of the Stonewall riots – the moment when the queer community worldwide rises up and begins its fight for equal rights.

The Netherlands, 2026. More than fifty years later, queer rights are once again — or perhaps still — under pressure. Bullying against queer people is on the rise. So is violence. Has anything really changed?

In Wachten op Marsha, a group of queer activists, led by Marvan, plan to hijack World Pride 2026 to draw attention to the growing harassment and violence against queer people. The pacifist Marvan feels the mounting pressure from the group not to give in to what lies ahead. Their freedom must be protected at all costs. But how far should they go?

Pre-show talk

An pre-show talk will take place before the performance.

Alejandra Ortiz will take you through who Marsha P. Johnson was, the founding of Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) together with drag queen Sylvia Rivera, and the Stonewall riots. Alejandra will talk about the legacy of Marsha and Sylvia and how the circumstances of that time resonate with the current struggle for queer rights in the Netherlands.

The talk lasts a maximum of 30 minutes.

Alejandra Ortiz is a writer and community builder. She is a Mexican trans woman who has lived in the Netherlands since 2015. Her memoir, The Truth Will Set Me Free, was published by Lebowski Publishers in 2022. Alejandra has contributed to three anthologies, and her first novel, Once upon a time there were Dolls, will be published in November 2026. As a curator, she led Queer Currents 2023 and the Pride Photo Award 2024. She also took part in De Appel’s Curatorial Programme 2024–2025. In recognition of her impact, she received the Winq Community Award (2023) and was named a Rising Star 2024 by Harper’s Bazaar Netherlands.
