Rum and Coca Cola
An old songbook from her father's legacy piqued the curiosity of Izaline Calister. It was a book about the Caribbean during World War II. She knew the music, but not the stories behind it. What happened during this war in the Caribbean?
Izaline learned about attacks from German submarines, the crucial role of the oil refineries, and the arrival of American soldiers. Fear and uncertainty went hand in hand with music and dance. Calypso, tumba, and reggae rang out, while American films and songs influenced island life. At the same time, there was criticism of that American presence, as heard in the protest song Rum and Coca Cola.
In her theater concert Rum and Coca Cola, Izaline mixes captivating music and intriguing stories into a sparkling cocktail about the 'forgotten' war in the West.
This performance has no interval.
