Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 & Mozart’s Symphony No. 40

The Nederlands Kamerorkest presents a programme in which drama and poetry alternate. Under the direction of Gordan Nikolić, you will hear Mozart’s Symphony No. 40. A mysterious symphony without a (known) patron, one of only two symphonies Mozart wrote in a minor key, admired by Schumann and Brahms.

Ballet music from the opera Idomeneo will also be performed, in which Mozart turns to the theatre. Particularly suited to Gordan Nikolić, a regular collaborator of Dutch National Opera.

Pianist Ivo Pogorelić performs Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Pogorelić took part in the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1980, but was eliminated before the final due to jury disputes and political manoeuvring, to the great astonishment of the audience. Former winner Marta Argerich demonstratively left the jury and called him a genius — a scandal was born. Today, both admirers and critics praise Pogorelić’s interpretation of Chopin, and he has even been described by a music critic as “the greatest interpreter of Chopin of our time”.
