Matthäus-Passion
The Matthäus-Passion is undoubtedly one of Bach's most impressive compositions. His musical narration of the passion story of Jesus touches deeply, time and again. The performances by the Bach Society are acclaimed worldwide. This year, the ensemble comes to Tilburg under the direction of baroque specialist Masaaki Suzuki.
As conductor, organist, and harpsichordist, Masaaki Suzuki brings this performance as close as possible to the original sound and playing style of the composer. He knows Bach's works better than anyone. With his renowned Bach Collegium Japan, he has recorded nearly all of the composer’s choral works. In 2005, he already conducted the Matthaus Passion with the Bach Society. Now - twenty years later - he returns with even more experience and a deeper vision of Bach's masterpiece.
Conductor Suzuki says:
“J.S. Bach may have performed the Matthaus Passion four times in his lifetime; I have conducted the work more than a hundred times around the world. Yet, it continues to challenge me. Every performance is an opportunity to dig deeper, to find even more beauty, and to perform the piece with full dedication.”
Whether this performance has an interval is not yet known.
