De erfenis is a family chronicle about a white Western family that falls victim to choices made in the past. To what extent do children bear responsibility for the choices their – now deceased – parents once made? Because an inheritance is not only a house and a collection of jewellery, but also misery. The play shows, in a hilarious way, the decline of a white Western family, through the eyes of one of the world’s most celebrated Black writers, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.

 

Toneelgroep Maastricht previously performed the theatre hit Augustus: Oklahoma, under the direction of director Michel Sluysmans. The direction of De erfenis is also in the hands of Sluysmans. It is the first play by Jacobs-Jenkins to be performed in the Netherlands.
